Ambrosia is ... Fighting a dangerous weed
Ambrosia is a plant that belongs to the Aster family. It has about 40 subspecies. The most common of them is the ragweed ambrosia. Once a species was distributed mainly in North America.
In ancient mythology of Hellas, the name "ambrosia" meant "food of the Gods". This name was given to the plant by the great biologist Linney (XVIII century). It is unlikely that he could assume that in some 100-200 years this plant would spread to many continents and countries and become an allergen and quarantine weed.
Types and places of growth
Ambrosia from ancient times grew mainly in North America. From these lands, it was transferred to many countries, including Russia. In our country, three types of ambrosia are especially common: tripartite, polynnolistnaya (which is successfully used in homeopathy and traditional medicine) and holometelate.
Ambrosia is a weed that lives in the southeastern, southern regions, in Primorye, the Volga region, as well as in Ukraine and in the North Caucasus. It litters the gardens, gardens, meadows, pastures, coastal and forest belts.Weed has a strong root system, through which dries the soil and inhibits the development of other plants.
What does ambrosia look like?
This is a perennial herbaceous, whose height is from 10 to 50 cm. Under favorable conditions (rains, moderately warm weather) it can reach a height of 2.5 meters.
The shape of the leaves and the general form of ambrosia - a plant resembling common wormwood (Chernobyl). Her inflorescences are baskets with same-sex staminate flowers that are collected in spike-like inflorescences. Female flowers are collected in the axils of the upper leaves or in their lower parts. Flowering begins in July and continues until the first frost.
Economic value - benefit or harm?
Ambrosia is a quarantine plant that litters agricultural crops and economic lands. Its harm lies in the fact that it constitutes a serious competition to cultivated plants. Ambrosia takes away their moisture, nutrients, light, living space. It perfectly tolerates drought, trampling and even prolonged flooding. Ambrosia actively suppresses the vital activity of other plants. At the same time, it always grows first on compacted, waste lands, thereby improving the soil and making it suitable for other plants. If you smell it before flowering, the soil will be additionally fertilized.
Harm of ambrosia for humans
A serious medical problem of this plant is the allergic properties of pollen, which provoke very serious diseases in many people - ambrosial pollinosis (asthma, allergies, etc.). At the same time, it should be noted that pollen and other wind-pollinated plants (bitter wormwood and nettle, wheat grass and wheat, etc.) have powerful allergenic properties. But flowering ambrosia is especially dangerous. Therefore, in recent years, cities have announced an annual fight with this plant.
Ambrosia in folk medicine
Many readers will probably be surprised when they learn that ambrosia, a weed that many people know, can be used as a medicinal plant. Involuntarily recalling the statement that there are no unhealthy plant species on earth, there are only those that are not fully understood.
Above-ground parts of the plant are used for medicinal purposes.Used to treat ragweed ambrosia, its seeds, flowers, pollen, roots. Its aerial part contains elements such as cinerol and camphor, in the seeds are essential oils (20%). On the basis of this plant, alcoholic and alcohol-free infusions, alcohol-ether and oil extracts are prepared, which are used both inwardly and externally.
In some diseases, ambrosia juice is used. In addition, leaves, stems and pollen are used for treatment. Seeds contain about 18% of edible oil. Ambrosia contains many vitamins, beneficial compounds, trace elements that help to cope with many ailments.
Ambrosia is a plant whose herb is widely used by folk healers in the treatment of hypertensive crises, feverish states, dysentery and diarrhea, and helminth infections.
Scientific studies have proven the bactericidal properties of the plant. Healers claim that it can help fight cancer tumors (in the initial stage).
For wounds and bruises, the herb is used as an antiseptic. Surprisingly, the doctors of official medicine use a homeopathic remedy, which is based on ambrosia, in the treatment of some allergic diseases, including hay (or ambrosial) fever.
Contraindications to the use of these drugs are:
- various allergies;
- individual intolerance.
Ambrosia is the plant from which the healing infusion is made. To do this you will need:

It is worth saying that ragberry leaf ragweed - this plant is rather controversial, so it should be treated with extreme caution. Before starting treatment, it is obligatory to consult with your doctor.
Fight against ambrosia
As we have already mentioned, the stalk of ambrosia can reach a height of two and a half meters. The plant has a well-developed, powerful root system. It can reach four meters in depth and more than a meter in diameter. Weed has extraordinary adaptability. Next to it, no plant can survive.
How to deal with it? It is impossible to pour the whole earth with herbicides, besides, if we consider that ambrosia is completely resistant to them and for these drugs they are not dangerous. Biologists recommend destroying a weed using its own “weapon” - displacing it with other, more powerful perennial plants.
As long as ambrosia grows (and this happens all summer, beginning in April), it cannot be mowed, as utilities often recommend and practice. This can lead to more active and intensive growth.
Therefore, the most effective way to combat this weed is to tear the young shoots of ambrosia from the root. You can mow a plant only after it starts throwing male panicles. This results from the fact that during the given period it does not grow. If seeds have already appeared, the stubble stems should be dried and immediately burned, because each plant produces up to 180 thousand seeds, which retain their properties for up to forty years.
We told you about the plant, which many people are expecting to bloom with horror, knowing what health problems it can cause. We hope that our readers will free areas near their homes, child care centers from ambrosia, which will prevent allergic reactions in a large number of people.
