JAXA revealed the surface of the asteroid Ryugu from a kilometer away

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA has published new images of the asteroid Ryugu (162173 Ryugu). They were made by the device "Hayabusa-2" on August 7. At the time of the shooting, the station was at a height of approximately one km from the surface of the small planet.
"Hayabusa-2" photographed Ryugu during an experiment to study the gravitational field of a small planet. In order to measure how the gravity of the asteroid affects the station's trajectory, JAXA engineers brought it closer to Ryug and for some time “let go” to float freely, without making any course corrections and carefully tracking changes in its position. In the course of the experiment, Hayabusa-2 approached Ryug on the minimum distance of 851 m, after which the engineers activated the engines, and the device gained altitude again.

The first pair of pictures was taken by Hayabusa-2, when the device was at an altitude of 1250 m.The close-up image is taken by the ONC-T navigation camera (Optical Navigation Camera - Telescopic). The following is an ONC-W1 wide-angle (Optical Navigation Camera - Wide angle) camera. The red rectangle corresponds to the location on the ONC-W1 image of the area photographed by ONC-T.

The second pair of images was taken by Hayabusa-2 when the device was only 1000 meters away from the surface of the asteroid. It is also worth noting that the famous astrologer Roman Tkachenko has already published a processed photo of Ryugu, which allows him to see much more details on the surface of the asteroid.
